Technical Information

In spite of much emphemeral and impermanent art produced during the last century, I firmly believe it is a professional duty of the painter to produce works that will not fade, yellow, crack or disintegrate.

The majority of works on this site are painting on 100% Belgian linen, and have first been sealed (sized) with rabbit skin glue. The foundation paint layer is a lead-based oil primer, which gives a permanent yet supple painting surface. The combination of hide glue and lead white is a painting support that has stood the test of time and is a guarantor against future cracks or defects in the paint surface.

I only use lightfast artist-grade oil paint, rendered fluid by a medium of linseed stand oil, damar varnish and gum turpentine. Each painting may have up to 10-20 thin layers in its construction.

Finally, the surface is treated with a coat of Golden MSA varnish, which contains ultraviolet light protection.
